The weather and climate features in Montenegro are extremely diverse. So many different climate zones on such a small territory. Montenegro is a rarity throughout the world. There are three climate zones in Montenegro: the coastal zone, the continental zone and the mountain zone.

Coastal Zone Climate:

The coastal belt weather stretches narrowly by the Adriatic Sea from Herceg Novi on the west to the mouth of the river Bojana on the east. It is separated from the hinterland by mountain ranges that at some points rise up to 1700 meters and prevent the influence of the sea on the continental region. In the coastal zone the average temperatures in July vary from 23,4°C to 25,6°C. The summers are usually long and dry, and the winters short and mild. The average number of solar hours per year at the seaside is 2500, and the extreme case is with Ulcinj with 2700 solar hours annually.

Continental Zone Climate:

The central part of Montenegro weather encompasses the Zeta plain and the Bjelopavlici plain. Mediterranean penetration along the Bojana valley and the Skadar Lake, the influence of the watery surfaces on this inland area, is very significant and it is why the central plain is warmer in summer than the coast. The cold air penetrations from the north into this area are frequent and are the reason why the number of frosty days is three times larger here than on the coast. Podgorica averages a January temperature of 5˚C and a July temperature of 28.5˚C. The maximum can reach 40˚C with a minimum of 10˚C.

Mountain Zone Climate:

The highest mountain area, Karst, consists of plains of around 1,700 m rising to peaks at around 2,000. The weather climate is sub-alpine with cold snowy winters, up to 5 m in the mountains, and moderate summers averaging 270 hours of sunshine per month. Winter maximum temperatures are around 3˚C with minimums around -8˚C. In the summer months it goes from 23˚C to 9˚C. If you are visiting these regions even in the middle of July, you should pack some warm clothing for the evenings.
